PhD degree stage (post-PALS) (as of the 2010-2011 academic year)
Pre-PhD guidance. In the PALS + PhD system implemented at INSIL the successful completion of the PALS postgraduate diploma studies is the key steppingstone towards guaranteeing success in the subsequent PhD research, thesis (doctoral dissertation), and defence (viva). When, by the completion of his/her PALS studies the student demonstrates his/her true ability to "go the step further", into PhD research and thesis preparation, the PhD degree option really takes shape. The candidate's will to achieve the "next step", and the institute's endorsement thereof (and based on the recommendation of the associate school where the PALS curriculum was attended), are two fundamental factors.
The process highlighted above is a means for adequate valuing of the PhD degree to be earned, and, to ensure that each PhD candidate successfully completes the PhD requirements. Since the final aim and possibility of earning a PhD degree is of high importance to a number of PALS students, and often already as of the moment of admission into the PALS programme, the institute will provide pre-PhD guidance, exploring with the student the best possible options. Undertaken sufficient time ahead of the PhD stage, and with a degree of flexibility that permits PhD-path adjustment during the PALS studies, the PALS + PhD alignment follows the possible changes in career aims and intended focal area(s) of PhD research.
PhD paths. There are several paths by means of which the PALS graduate can undertake the final PhD stage and earn the degree. Different factors influence the options and choices. The first such factor is whether the student had undertaken the PALS+PhD on his/her own initiative (only), or when he/she applied for admission he/she was also specifically recommended by a governmental agency, educational institution (university), or other (inter)national authority.
Another factor is the completion of the PALS programme on a single track or dual track basis. In the single track option the PhD research and dissertation can be completed at a later stage of one's career. In the dual track one, the PhD is undertaken immediately after the PALS is completed.
When the PhD is completed at INSIL, such takes place under the ediLids international doctoral school framework cooperation with other institutions/faculty for the thesis approval, review, and defence. If the PhD is undertaken at another institution, possibly in the candidate's home country or residence, such process can be either in cooperation with INSIL, or independently. There is also the possibility by which the PhD is undertaken under the provisions of a special agreement between the higher education authority in the candidate's home country and the INSIL conjointly with a partner or affiliate institution. For francophone students who wish to obtain the French doctorat d'Etat degree specifically, there is the requirement of also enrolling in a French state university doctoral school.
Doctoral supervision (tutorship). The tutorship is organised in accordance with the regulations and agreements pertaining to the chosen path and the educational institution(s) regulations. Specific guidelines are provided to the doctoral candidates.
